The Brief

This was a challenge, to design a front garden to take account of the four metre difference in height between the front door and the side of the house! The clients wanted a contemporary design that would look good from above as their living space is on the first and second floors. The design also had to accommodate access to the back garden.

The Solution

A curving set of steps wraps around a circle which is split in half by a retaining wall so that the circle is on two different levels. Planting reinforces the circle and a central 'path' of slate and artificial turf runs through the centre linking the top area to the bottom area of the garden (which was finished off with a circle of turf, after the pictures were taken). The slate path to the front door had a long slim section channelled out and after led light fittings were inserted had a sandblasted section of glass fitted on the top to create the lighting leading to the front door. We were thrilled that the client was bold enough to go with our suggestion of painting all the retaining walls purple.
