The Brief
When we first visited site, it was barely more than a field with a garage and the basement in progress. The clients wanted a garden that would suit their traditional looking house but that would have contemporary elements.
The Solution
Gabions were used in the construction of the basement, and we decided to continue with that theme and use them to retain the earth to create the level areas to the rear of the house. These were broken up with sections of red brick walling and then up lit to make a real feature.
The brown looking boxes are made from expanded Corten steel mesh and are lit at night. The pleached trees separate the parking and garage areas and the driveway surface is chippings rolled into tar edged with granite setts. The paving is a rustic slate from Natural Paving.
The large terrace at the front is punctuated with topiary bay trees and the house is set into its surroundings with colourful planting.
